ABOUT THE CANE CORSO

The Imposing Italian Mastiff

The Cane Corso (KAH-neh-KOR-soh; plural: Cani Corsi) is a large-boned, muscular working dog originating from Italy. Standing between 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder and often weighing over 100 pounds, they possess an intimidating yet undeniably noble and majestic presence. Beneath their short coat lies a powerful, athletic frame built for endurance, protection, and working drive.

Temperament & Intelligence

Intelligent, confident, and deeply devoted, the Cane Corso forms an unbreakable bond with its human family. They are affectionate and loyal companions that excel in protecting their home. However, because they are naturally assertive, willful, and possessive, clear, firm leadership and consistent structured training from day one are essential.

Exercise & Purpose

As an active and athletic working breed, Cani Corsi require both physical exercise and mental engagement. They thrive when given a job—whether in agility, obedience, personal protection, or working alongside their owners. Daily exercise, training routines, and early socialization ensure they mature into stable, well-rounded family members capable of discerning true threats from everyday situations.

Highlighted Program Values

 A Shared Passion:

  • For April and Todd Wall, raising and showing dogs isn’t just a pastime—it’s a lifelong commitment to preserving breed excellence, health, and temperament.

Bred for Excellence:

  • From winning pedigrees to rigorous health testing, every Mathis Lake pup is a testament to our dedication.

Winners in the Ring:

  • While we take pride in our success in the show ring, our ultimate reward is seeing our dogs thrive in loving homes.

Adhering to correct eye shape, placement, and color standards is crucial to preserving the Cane Corso's functional eye health and true breed type. Sub-frontally set, almond-shaped eyes with tight-fitting lids shield the dog from environmental debris and protect against painful ocular conditions such as entropion and ectropion, ensuring optimal field of vision and physical durability in a working guardian. Beyond structural health, eye color harmony—where dark brown to amber irises match the specific coat pigment—directly influences the signature "hawk-like" gaze that defines the Corso's alert, noble, and intimidating expression. Deviations such as round "bug" eyes or unpigmented rims compromise not only the breed's historical conformation standards but also weaken the keen, discerning look that reflects a stable and confident guardian.
